Kalong island is located near Rinca, one hour by boat from Labuan Bajo. In the mangrove forest of Kalong island, there live thousands of fruit eating kalongs. The local people call kalong for flying fox in English ( very big bat ). Few minutes after sunset as it is going to be dark, the kalongs make start flying out of the mangrove forest to continue to Flores where and Rinca to look for fruits. More kalongs fly to Flores as there are enough fruits there. If you want to see them flying back to the mangrove forest, you have to get up earlier at 04.00 - 05.00 am. Because of the kalong, many local agencies sell the kalong island in combining it with other programme to Rinca and Komodo
